So everyone knows that high-born ladies were big into embroidery. There are several ladies with public talents for embroidery, and Amelia, for one, would love a handy stitch and bitch, for creativity and gossip, among other things.
That said, knitting is also period appropriate! While usually more common in lower classes, anyone needing warm things for cold climes could be in need, and what better way to show support to the troops than making sure they are prepared? Crochet doesn't seem to make its way into ladies magazines until the 1840s, though. Pout. Still, plenty of opportunities to use fiber arts for in character bonding!
Reminder that tonight is our first RJ Craft Circle meetup at 7 PM EST-9PM :D On the new RJ Craft Circle Discord https://discord.gg/UrxD7Ty3 @Amelia Rutherford (Renee) @Morven Blackwood (Jenn) @Lady Eleanor Savery (Hilary) @Lady Margery Eddowes (Amber she/they) @Viscountess Charlotte Hughes @Lady/Marquess Emmeline Petty-Fitzmaurice (Robin) @Lord Ambrose Etienne Galois (Ezekiel) @H. Ada Everley Whitman (Carly) @Lady Olivia Curtis (Helen)
Feel free to invite any RJ players who are not on the forums. Hopefully next week, I can ask @Athena Peters to send round an email invite for all players.
ETA: This group created with permission of GMs. Reminder that RJ Craft Circle is OOC and fan run only.
ETA2: If you don't have a discord app, it is free and easy to set up even if you are not the best at technology *coughs myself cough*
I do have a Discord server I'd be willing to lend to the cause! I have it specifically for crafting for charity causes, which dovetails with this nicely. While I won't be there, I'm totally down with y'all using it!
Ok yall. I will be hosting the first Romancing Jan Craft Circle on Zoom this Monday March 15th at 7 pm. EST :D @Athena Peters, can I send you an invitation to email to all players so everyone can feel included? The first week, we will not have a skill share. I want to take a tally of just how many ppl we get and what everyone's craft of choice is and their skill level in that craft. Cheers! @Amelia Rutherford @Morven Blackwood (Jenn) @Lady Eleanor Savery (Hilary) @Amber Logsdon @Viscountess Charlotte Hughes @Lady/Marquess Emmeline Petty-Fitzmaurice (Robin) @Lord Ambrose Etienne Galois (Ezekiel) @H. Ada Everley Whitman (Carly) @Lady Olivia Curtis (Helen)
ETA: *Scratches back of head in embarrassment* I guess free Zoom accounts only allow you to meet for forty minutes at a time ://// My friend tells me u can leave an restart a group meeting and that works fine but it's a bit of a pain for all guests involved. Does anyone have an account they would be willing to let the group use just for this event?
I'm not clear on "ownership" here when it comes to who IC is the leader of the stitch & bitch... or if it's a shared group by Theodosia & Amelia (that could be a cool connection, btw... that the two of you were friends? rivals? who started to get together and it slowly it grew to this group). Anyway could whomever it is maybe create a chat group with all the members here?
YES please count me in. Helen is an avid crafter, and Olivia is well-versed in ladylike arts.
Oh IRL I am an embroider, historical sewist and over pandemic got into weavign trim so I would love to be a part of this. Ada, surprisingly loves embroidery and has very fashion forward ideas about how to style it.
I'm more of a sewing type person (currently making my first Regency suit) but I would love to join! Mondays work best for me as well and it would help with the tedium of hand sewing long seams if I was on a call with people!
Monday is best for me. But... I also can't commit to every week, so I'll just see what y'all decide and show up whenever I can. :)
I'm free Monday and Friday evenings. Also, when you say 7pm what time zone are you using? I ask because I'm in CST and most of the players I've interacted with here on the forums are on the east coast.
Mondays or Tuesdays would be perfect for me!!
Alright yall, lets do this. Comment below with the best days and times for you and I will start hosting a weekly OOC craft group on Zoom. Once I take this poll, maybe @Athena Peters can include it in an email to all players so non forum players can all be included. I am considering Monday, Tuesday, or Friday nights around 7 pm EST. (So far Mondays are winning)
Cool. Well im more than happy to host an OOC crafty time. Also happy to have a half hr where someone spotlights their craft type for ppl new to that craft. For example, happy to do a week i teach basic knitting and then another week where someone does beginner cross stitch stitches.
I am more than happy to host a weekly OOC fiber crafts circle for players of Romancing Jan. If someone else wants to take the lead on this, that's totally fine too. I'm not out here to steal anyone's thunder. It's just my understanding so far is that everyone else's proposals were for in character groups who communicated by the mail.
Can we host a real event on zoom? If so, would GMs like it to be OOC bc they won't be there to moderate discussion? I am also hoping to host a tea party Zoom social either in character or Ooc depending on GMs opinions on the matter. I know GMs expressed a desire that all plot happen only in letters so I'm don't know what they think but respect their choice on the matter
Hello all! I'll be writing to all of those interested within the next two days (sent out by 03/05/21 ), and will post a members list both in the letter and in this forum when mail is sent. Happy stitching and here's to connections over the floss and goss[ip]!
I would love to join a mixed fiber arts group so I can knit or sew with company <3 will likely sew a Regency dress at some point for my character.
I'm interested in learning embroidery for the very first time, but have no idea where to begin. My best friend used to embroider favors for our larp characters to wear and even though that larp is long gone, I still treasure the favor she made for me. I had thought of making tokens for others, especially since they are pretty easy to send in the mail. If you don't mind helping a newbie get started out of game, I'd love for Catherine to be included.
Ooo!! IRL I used to do counted cross stitch and this would be the perfect excuse to take up the hobby again. Charlotte, being a properly raised lady would also have some experience with a needle and floss. If there's some sort of embroidery/knitting circle, count me in please and thank you!
I too am very new to embroidery but am trying my hand at it. I'll join whatever circle we end up with.
Also, crochet proper has not been invented, but Irish crochet is on the verge of popularization and explodes mid-century. But, it was thought to already be there by the time we're in game.
"In 1743 Lady Arabella Denny introduced Lace-making to Workhouses for the poor in Dublin, & it is thought that it was an early form of Crochet, imitating the appearance of Venetian Gros Point".
I wanted to find a unique craft to make trinkets for folks. So, since my character's heritage is Irish and she spent a year over there with family, I'm not sweating perfect historical accuracy and I'm saying she picked it up from her family.
Lady Jessamine is a gossip AND very skilled at embroidery👀
